“It has always been my opinion that artists should be politically conscious and in my personal case being born as an Iranian, a country that has undermined basic human rights, particularly since the Islamic revolution, I have uncontrollably gravitated toward making art that is concerned with issue of tyranny, dictatorship, oppression, and political injustice. Although I don’t consider myself an activist I believe my art regardless of its nature, is an expression of protest, and a cry for humanity.”

Shirin Neshat (born 1957 in Qazvin, Iran) is an Iranian visual artist who lives in New York City, known primarily for her work in film, video and photography. Her artwork centers on the contrasts between Islam and the West, femininity and masculinity, public life and private life, antiquity and modernity, and bridging the spaces between these subjects.

Shirin Neshat, 1957 geboren, wuchs in Teheran auf und ging während der Revolution 1979 in die Vereinigten Staaten. Sie wurde ab Mitte der neunziger Jahre mit ihrer Fotoserie „Women of Allah“ bekannt. Für ihre Filme wurde Neshat mit vielen Preisen ausgezeichnet. 2017 inszenierte sie die Oper „Aida“ bei den Salzburger Festspielen.
